Why You Should Soak Your Oats

As someone with coeliac my digestive system isn't that forgiving when I consume oats (they're similar in structure to gluten), even though pure oats are naturally gluten free the jury is still out as to whether oats are 100% safe to eat if you have coeliac. Most oats are produced in a factory where wheat or other gluten containing products are produced, so they can easily become contaminated. You can of course get gluten free oats, but some coeliacs still have a problem with these grains, and that's due to the change in production compared to what it was like years ago - everyone used to soak all their grains before they ate them or cooked with them, but this process has become lost in modern day life where everything is sped up and we're hungry for 'fast food'.

All grains contain something called phytic acid, which if left untreated binds minerals like calcium, magnesium and iron in the digestive tract which makes blocks our bodies from absorbing the goodness. This can lead to long term adverse effects, IBS and can be especially troublesome for coeliacs who have trouble absorbing nutrients anyway. Soaking the grains over night allows the enzymes to break down and neutralise phytic acid, thus hugely improving their nutritional benefits and your stomach happiness as well!

I'm a huge porridge lover, I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner but it did cause me to become quite bloated. I started soaking my oats after I was diagnosed with coeliac disease  and I have noticed a huge difference in the way my body responds and the ease in which it handles digestion.
I soak my oats the night before by placing them in a bowl, covering them with filtered and letting them soak overnight. When morning comes and I'm ready for my big bowl of yummy porridge I just cook the oats the way I normally would, with almond milk in a pan, and enjoy!
The porridge is always smoother, feels more cooked and tastes so delicious but the important thing is that I don't get bloated all! I don't feel heavy, lethargic and my tummy is happy, rather than complaining. I feel like my body can digest the oats a lot more easily, and is benefiting from all the glorious nutrition too.

So, if you love your oats but aren't sure your body does try soaking them overnight, maybe you'll notice a difference like I did!
