Natural Hay Fever Remedies

Hay fever season is well and truly upon us and as a sufferer of seasonal allergies I know just how irritating  and uncomfortable it can be. You don't want to be all bunged up and constantly sneezing all day, it can really take the fun out of a day in the sun!

Seasonal allergies are the result of a confused immune system; when the nose inhales pollen from flowering plants it causes an allergic reaction in some people with the body responding in the same way as if it were being invaded by bacteria or virus. Inflammation of the sinuses, eyes and respiratory system occurs which is what causes the sneezing, watering & itchy eyes and scratchy throat.

More and more people are reaching for over the counter solutions such as eye drops, nose sprays and pills for allergy relief but these drugs contain a whole load of other ingredients that really aren't going to be doing your body any good. Reaching for herbal remedies is far safer and actually works better too!

Local Honey
This is probably the most well-known natural hay-fever remedy and it's one that really works! Honey contains pollen but it doesn't trigger an allergic reaction, instead it builds up your immunity and desensitises you to the pollen. Make sure the honey is raw because if it's been heat treated the pollen will have burst and been destroyed, making it useless for allergy fighting! Try stirring a teaspoon into your porridge, starting your day with a cup of warm water with lemon & honey or add some to your smoothie.

Vitamin C
Found in foods such as oranges, kiwi fruit, peppers and the superfood baobab, vitamin C is one to make sure you're getting enough of it you're an allergy sufferer. It provides a natural decongestant and antihistamine which will help alleviate symptoms of hay fever.

Eucalyptus Oil
This is a distilled oil that comes from the dread leaves of a eucalyptus tree and it's been used to treat allergies for many years. Eucalyptus oil is highly anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial as well as being a natural decongestant and antiseptic. Try placing a couple of drops onto a cotton pad or tissue and sniff it throughout the day to help with your allergy symptoms.

Chamomile Tea
Not only does this tea taste delicious and is super soothing before bed but chamomile is a natural antihistamine and antioxidant. The tea also contains anti-inflammatory agents to fight swollen eyes and other irritable symptoms.

Peppermint Tea
Known for relieving nasal and sinus congestion peppermint tea is another great herbal remedy to help with your allergies. The essential oils also contain anti-inflammatory properties! Try starting your day with a cup of Three Mint Tea by Pukka - it's my favourite.

Spirulina & Chlorella
Both these superfood powders are green-algae that have powerful detoxifying properties and have been proven to help reduce symptoms of allergies. Both powders will also provide your body with a hit of green-goodness which will help to keep your immune system strong.

So, next time the seasonal allergies attack try some of these herbal remedies instead of popping the pills!
