Second Trimester Pregnancy Essentials

As my second trimester draws to a close and I make my way into the third and final pregnancy trimester, I thought I'd share some essential products that I couldn't have been without between weeks 12 and 27  of pregnancy.

Tummy Oil

My tummy (and boobs, and hips, and bum, and thighs...) has certainly grown during the second trimester, so I've been using products to keep the skin feeling supple and moisturised to prevent stretch marks and itching as the skin stretches. In the morning I like the Palmer's Cocoa Butter Lotion as it's pretty light and sinks in super quickly, but in the evening I like to use either the Palmer's Cocoa Butter Tummy Butter which is really think and more heavily scented but extremely moisturising, or the My Expert Midwife Fantastic Skin Elastic Oil. I've found the ritual of using these products helps me bond with baby a little more too!

Pregnancy Pillow

It's really important to stop sleeping in your back or tummy as your bump grows as it can be dangerous for baby, so sleeping specifically on your left side is recommended. This can sometimes become a little uncomfortable, especially as your bump gets bigger, but spooning a good pregnancy pillow is a lifesaver! Since I've started using mine to keep my hips aligned I've noticed I sleep better, I don't roll onto my back as much as I haven't suffered any hip pain (touch wood). I was kindly gifted a Kally Body Pillow and I'm obsessed with it! It's perfectly firm, well stuffed, super long, soft and a must-have for the second trimester and beyond.

16-21 Weeks Pregnancy Diary

 

It's official, I'm over halfway through my pregnancy! I can't believe how quickly time has started to go in the last few weeks and I can now say I'm 21 weeks pregnant.

Weeks 16-21 have been the easiest weeks of my pregnancy yet, but it hasn't been as easy as I expected. So many told me I'd get the second trimester energy burst, but I've felt exhausted every day and my mood has been a bit all over the place too. Let me feel you in on the last few weeks.

How I've Felt

As I mentioned above, I've been feeling really tired still! It's not the extreme exhaustion I faced in the first trimester, but more like I need a nap come 1pm and bed past 9pm isn't an option. Working out is still a bit of a struggle, but I have fitted in a few Bumps & Burpees workouts and a few weighted workouts too to try and keep my body strong. Apart from this I'm still walking regularly with my dog and aiming to do pregnancy yoga 4 times a week (even if it's just 15 minutes).

My mood has been the most irregular it's been throughout my pregnancy and I've felt a few down periods, which I didn't expect. I always assumed I'd be 100% happy as soon as I was carrying a baby, but even though I'm not sad about anything specific and I know I have so much to look forward to, I can't help feeling very low some days. I've really tried to take care of myself on these days because having suffered with chronic depression in the past I know I need to stop myself slipping into a downwards spiral. Taking time away from social media, getting into the fresh air, having a bath, seeing family and relaxing all help.

Apart from this I've been feeling good! No nausea, no aches or pains and nothing to complain about - yet. I have noticed the shortness of breath becoming more apparent, especially when walking up hills etc, but I know that's normal due to the extra weight I'm carrying and everything becoming a little more squished inside.

12-15 Weeks Pregnancy Diary

 

I officially turn 16 weeks pregnant tomorrow (where has the time gone?) which means I'm 4 weeks into the second trimester! So far the second trimester has been a breeze compared to the first, but there have been some struggles and some things I didn't expect.


Cravings & Food Aversions

If you read my pregnancy announcement post you'll know I suffered quite badly with nausea in the first trimester and I had a lot of food aversions. I'm happy to report that from week 11 the nausea gradually reduced and my appetite become a little more normal. I can now stomach vegetables which is amazing, I'm back to my beloved porridge in the mornings instead of plain toast and I haven't been sick of felt like I was going to be sick for weeks - yippee!

I'm definitely not back to 100% because I still can't stomach dark chocolate, I still don't really like spice and I still get moments of feeling sicky. I'm hoping as the days and weeks go on I feel better and better because I miss cooking and getting excited about food!

Tiredness

I have a lot more energy than I did in the first trimester, where some days I struggled to climb the stairs, but I'm still feeling very tired in the afternoons and evenings. I seem to have one day where my energy is higher so I'll go on a long walk or exert myself a little more, then the following day I'll feel absolutely exhausted!

I'm Pregnant! Finding Out & Symtomns


Surprise! I'm pregnant!

It feels so good to be able to say that out loud and for what's felt like the biggest secret in the world to not be a secret anymore. The past few weeks have been challenging to say the least, emotionally and physically, and all I've wanted to do is talk about it but my partner and I wanted to keep this to ourselves (and close family) until we hit the 12 week mark. When I found out I was pregnant I knew I wanted to document my journey on my blog and Instagram, the highs and lows, the reality and everything that comes along with growing a human. This first post is going to be about how I found out and my experience during the first trimester.



Finding Out & First Signs
If you've following my blog or my Instagram for a while then you'll most likely know that I have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and I've battled imbalanced hormones about 10 years. I've always thought I'd struggle to carry a baby as one of the main symptoms of PCOS is difficulty getting pregnant, and with my irregular periods I didn't even know if I was ovulating or if my body was working correctly.

I stopped taking the contraceptive pill two years ago (blog post about that here) and ever since then I've battled with awful pains every month and irregular periods of anything from 28 day cycles to 48 day cycles. These sometimes long cycles made it impossible to know when I was ovulating but also made it difficult to know every month if my period was on it's way or if perhaps I needed to take a pregnancy test!

In mid-June it got to around the 35th day of my cycle and no sign of my period yet, which wasn't unusual, but something felt different. My very first symptom was a change in appetite, not only was I more hungry than before but I was having food aversions to foods and drink I would normally I love - namely my morning cup of tea, chocolate (crazy!), fish and even porridge. This was teamed with a slight nausea, fatigue and a migraine-type headache, so I thought I probably just had a virus.
Fast forward a week and my period was still a no-show and my symptoms were still the same with a bit more intensity and even stranger appetite (I just wanted all the plain carbs and no vegetables!).
I knew at this point something more was up, so early on a Saturday morning I drove to a shop and picked up a pregnancy test.
