Is Your Morning Coffee Damaging Your Health?

Love it or hate it Coffee is loved by many and consumed by millions of people every single day but what effect does it have on the body? Coffee is a known stimulate, hence why people drink it throughout the day to wake themselves up and give themselves energy, but is that energy really long-lasting and is your daily coffee doing you more harm than good?

Stress & Anxiety
We all know I'm about happiness boosting foods, and unfortunately coffee doesn't fall into that category. Drinking coffee promotes the release of the stress hormones cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine which increase your body's heart rate, blood pressure and tension levels which leads to that 'flight or fight' response. Caffeine in coffee is also known to interfere with GABA levels, a neurotransmitter responsible for regulating your mood - low levels of GABA are linked to depression and anxiety disorders.

Increase Acidity
Protecting the delicate pH levels in your body is extremely important as it can help prevent chronic illness, disease and infection. An acidic body is a breeding ground for bacteria and helps nasty cells  to thrive - this causes problems with our nervous system and muscle function. Coffee has an extremely acidic effect on the body; when you drink coffee it causes your body to produce large amounts hydrochloric acid, the increase in this acid can have really ill effects on the body.
IBS & Heartburn
Coffee makes your stomach produce more acid than usual (as mentioned above) which can cause bad heart-burn. It can also irritate the lining of your small intestine which can not only make IBS symptoms worse but actually cause you to develop IBS with symptoms such as cramps, spasms, diarrhoea and constipation.

Mineral Absorption
Drinking too much coffee can effect the way your body absorbs iron. Iron is a very important mineral in the body, it's needed to carry oxygen around and without it our bodily tissue, digestive system and even our organs can't function so efficiently. Coffee can not only have negative effects on the way the body absorbs iron but it also makes it harder for the body to retain calcium, zinc and magnesium.

Laxative Effects
Some people deliberately use coffee for it's strong laxative effects but this can cause real problems. Coffee stimulates gastric emptying before your stomach has fully digested the food you've eaten, meaning you don't absorbs all the vital nutrients your body needs. As the food is moving through your intestines too early it can also cause irritable effects on the bowel which can lead to inflammation.

Carcinogenic Substances
Carcinogenic substances are substances that are known to be cancer causing, and the acrylamide which forms in coffee beans when they're roasted at high temperatures is known to be carcinogenic and it's considered to be one of the major sources of dangerous chemical in the standard American diet.

Dehydration & Ageing Effects
The toxins in coffee can actually stall our cells from metabolising effectively which results in lower cell renewal....i.e accelerated ageing. On top of this, coffee can be very dehydrating to the skin.

Instead of your normal cup of coffee each morning why not driving hot water with lemon, the benefits are amazing (more on that here) and you can even add a little honey for delicious sweetness! Alternatively green or herbal teas are a fantastic option for hydration, detoxification and will do your body the world of good.
