Three Ways Alcohol Effects Your Body

Most of us enjoy an alcoholic beverage every now and then which is totally fine but drinking every day or in excessive amounts can have extreme negative effects on the body. Consuming alcohol causes all sorts of side effects and triggers reactions in your precious body that harm your health more than you may have thought.

There are a lot of very serious health issues linked with excessive alcohol consumption but today I'm talking more about short term or immediate effects alcohol has on the body.

Depleted Water & Nutrients
If you've ever had a few too many you'll know that feeling of waking up in the morning feeling insanely thirsty, more dehydrated than you thought was possible and like you've got no nutrients in your body at all. Alcohol irritates the stomach lining which reduces your ability to absorb nutrients from the wonderful food you're eating which can make you feel sluggish, fatigued and cause a horrible upset stomach! Alcohol is also dehydrating - it decreases the body's ability to produce the anti-diuretic hormone which is used by the body to reabsorb water, and your body also loses a lot of fluid through increased urination.

Increased Fat Storage
If you're trying to get your body fat down then alcohol isn't something to be consuming regularly. Not only is your calorific intake a lot higher if you drink excessively but did you know your body prioritises metabolising alcohol over burning fat, carbs and all the other foods in your body? Alcohol also breaks down amino acids and stores them as fat.

Increased Feelings Of Depression
If you suffer from depression or anxiety or perhaps you're prone to having down spells then you should try to avoid drinking alcohol. While a glass of wine or a G&T can temporarily make you feel relaxed the long term effects are only negative when it comes to your mood. Our brains are extremely delicate and rely on a perfect balance of chemicals to stay happy & healthy, but drinking alcohol disrupts that balance and affects how we feel and how we act. Regular drinking lowers the levels of serotonin in the brain, a chemical that's vital for keeping your mood regulated. Alcohol is also linked to feelings of stress, anxiety and even aggression.

Life's for living, life's for enjoying and life's for having fun but you only get one body and one life, which is so precious. We must look after ourselves and care for our body the way it deserves!
