Baobab - The Superfood That Fights Colds

This week I've been hit with a cold. Luckily I very rarely get colds or flu like bugs but if I'm going to get one then it's bound to be at this time of the year as we transition into Autumn, I think it's my body adjusting to the colder, wetter weather. When a dreaded cold hits I instantly do a few things to help fight it off like making sure I drink lots of water, get plenty of rest and eat all the greens possible! I also add a certain superfood into as many meals as I can and it's something I swear by to cure cold and flus, that superfood is Baobab.

Baobab powder is a superfood powder made from an African fruit that's packed full of nutritional goodness! Baobab is really delicious; it has a gorgeous fresh, zesty, citrus flavour to it so is perfect to add to fruity smoothies or strawberry topped porridge....hey, I even love it added to things like guacamole for a zesty kick or incorporating it into lemon vegan cheesecake (recipe here!).

The baobab tree is very famous in Africa - it's often referred to as the 'upside-down tree' because it's branches resemble roots sticking up. It holds green coloured pods that once cracked open hold a powdery white fruit where all the goodness lies! Baobab is absolutely bursting with vitamin C, in fact it has six times more vitamin C than an orange and just 2 teaspoons of baobab provides you with 33% of your recommended daily intake! Vitamin C is of course something we should get plenty of to fight against the symptoms of colds as this vitamin is responsible for aiding the growth and repair of tissues you in all parts of the body. It's also vital for skin, bone and teeth health! Without vitamin C our body becomes weak, fatigued and our immune system will suffer.

Baobab isn't just a vitamin C bomb though, oh no, that's only one benefit out of many that this superfood holds. Baobab powder is almost 50% fibre and contains more antioxidants than any other whole fruit - pretty amazing, right? Baobab contains more potassium than bananas, over double the amount of calcium than milk and is rich in iron and magnesium too.

As baobab is a natural source of these nutrients it means our body can digest and absorb them a lot more easily - far easier than vitamin supplements, which ensures a greater vitamin intake in the body.
