5 Helpful Tips If You Work From Home

Working from home has it's pros and cons - yes you can stay in trackies all day if you wish, you can take breaks whenever you fancy and you can choose the hours you work but it also means you have to be very strict with yourself, you have to manage your time well and you have to be a top organiser.

I'm very lucky that I have my own business and get to run it from the comfort of my own home, which I do love but it definitely has challenging moments. I found it a real struggle transitioning from going out to work 5 days a week to working in the same building I live in. It's harder than you might think and it's been a learning curve, that's for sure!

Here are my top tips to keep you feeling happy, motivated and organised if you work from home.

Have A Separate Work Area
I find if I'm living and working in the same space I can go a little bit crazy! I don't feel so motivated, I get easily distracted and it's hard to find the separation between what's personal space and what's work space. A good way to deal with this is to find a separate work area in your house, if you're lucky enough to have a spare bedroom or a study then that's amazing - use that, but if not is there a corner of a room you could put a desk and use that as your work station? Try and make sure the space is in a quiet area of the house, somewhere you won't be interrupted, and preferably somewhere light and airy. Having this separate area (even if its just a corner of a room) helps you have a little bit of separation and I guarantee you'll feel more productive if you have a separate space to 'go to work'.

Plan Your Week In Advance
At the end of the week, on a Friday afternoon, take some time to sit down and make a to-do list for the following week. Decide which tasks take priority, make a note of any deadlines and set out a schedule for the week ahead. Give yourself certain jobs to do on each day and stick to it! Make sure to tick off each task once you've completed it, honestly it's the most satisfying feeling.
This well help you stay more productive, your days will seem a lot clearer and you'll find you get a lot more work done. It also helps to reduce stress because you've got a clear and well thought out schedule in front of you to help you stay on track.

Set Aside A Lunch Hour
When you work from home it's so easy to grab some lunch and sit at your desk with it, or even not to eat lunch at all! I'm definitely guilty of not taking a proper lunch hour but I think it's so important, and can actually help us be more productive later in the day. Our brains need time to switch off and our body needs lunch to fuel it through the day, so make sure you set aside an hour to eat a nourishing meal and switch off from work-mode for a bit with a book, your favourite tv programme or call a friend for a chat - just try not to get too distracted, make sure you actually get back to work!

Take Time To Stretch
Sitting down all day can make you feel fatigued and achey, so getting up every half an hour for a 2 minute stretch or walk around can really help! I set my alarm for every half an hour and make sure I get up to move my body, this might be by rolling out my yoga mat and having a little wiggle or it might simply be going for a walk to the kitchen to make a cup of tea - hey, while the kettle is boiling do some simple stretches or a little march on the spot to get your blood flowing. Your brain will kick into gear, you'll feel more alert and you'll be ready to get back to work.

Organise Your Work Space
A disorganised, messy work space will only distract you and stress you out! Keep organised with folders, files and helpful storage. Make sure to keep your desk free from clutter too! I recommend keeping inspiring, motivation quotes around your desk, some plants or flowers for added colour and books to spark your creativity.
